Rajkummar Rao Dives into Netflix Dark Comedy After Maalik Promotions

While Rajkummar Rao is currently neck-deep in promotions for his upcoming action-packed gangster thriller Maalik, the versatile actor is already gearing up for his next venture, a Netflix dark comedy that promises to deliver a wicked twist to the murder mystery genre. Directed by Aditya Nimbalkar, this yet-untitled film marks a sharp departure from Nimbalkar’s gritty 2024 release, Sector 36, opting for a lighter, albeit darker, black comedy centered on a murder with quirky undertones.

The film is set to go on floors this month, with principal photography slated for a two-month shoot primarily in Mumbai. Key filming locations include 1 Aerocity in Marol and Film City in Goregaon. A source close to the production told Mid-Day, “Aditya has charted out a two-month shoot. Rajkummar was so impressed by the script that he has also joined the project as a co-producer.” This marks Rao’s second foray into production after Toaster, another Netflix title scheduled for release later in 2025.

The announcement comes amid growing excitement around Rao’s other high-profile project, the Sourav Ganguly biopic, where he will portray the iconic cricketer. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, with whom Rao previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed Trapped (2016), the sports drama remains in the pre-production phase. With the Ganguly project yet to begin filming, Rao has found the perfect window to take on this dark comedy.

Meanwhile, Rao’s upcoming theatrical release, Maalik, is set to hit cinemas on July 11. Directed by Pulkit and backed by producers Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, the film features Rao as a gangster-turned-power player. He leads a stellar cast including Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, and 12th Fail breakout Medha Shankr. As Rao juggles promotions for Maalik and prepares for his Netflix project, his ability to balance diverse roles and production duties continues to solidify his reputation as one of Bollywood’s most dynamic talents.
